Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability?
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a program administered by the Social Security Administration that provides monetary assistance for those who qualify as disabled under the administration’s rules and regulations. This program requires that the worker has earned 20 out of 40 work credits during the past 10 years or that he or she has recently worked at least five years. Workers who do not qualify for the SSDI program can often qualify for benefits under the Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) program.
In order to qualify for monthly SSDI disability payments the worker must:
- Have worked at a job that pays into the Social Security system
- Have a medical condition that is severe enough to satisfy the requirements of the Social Security laws and regulations
